Google Maps Is Changing the Way We See the World
2007-07-07 04:22:00
In 1765, a 22-year-old British naval officer named James Rennell set out to map the entire Indian subcontinent. Traveling with a small party of soldiers, he used the advanced technologies of the day: a compass and a distance-measuring wheel called a perambulator. During the six-year journey, one soldier was killed by a tiger, five were mauled by a leopard, and Rennell was wounded in an attack by angry locals. He survived, and his detailed maps and atlas, published in the 1780s, defined British understanding of India for generations.Years later, a British geographer wrote that, to Rennell, "blanks on the map of the world were eyesores." More than two centuries later, within the decidedly safer confines of Building 45 on Google 's Mountain View, California, campus, John Hanke clicks the 3-foot image of Earth projected on his office wall and spins it around to India. Hanke, the director of Google Earth and Google Maps , zooms in for a closer look at Bangalore. At first, the city appeared i

Blackberry: Remove, Move, and Hide Icons
2007-06-28 23:19:00
The first thing most blackberry(bb) owners want to know is how to remove some of the useless icons on the main screen. Hiding these icons is very simple. Here is how to proceed. After I unlocked my blackberry and signed up for a new service, I noticed that I had a ton of duplicated icons. Most blackberry systems have too much installed anyway. Using these techniques, you'll be able to remove icons from the main screen thus increasing your efficiency.Hide an Icon:1. Go to the main screen of your blackberry2. Go to the icon you want to hide3. Press ALT and then press down on your scroll wheel4. Select Hide ApplicationUnhide an Icon:If you ever need to see your hidden icons again, you can alt+scroll wheel on the main screen and select Show All. This will display all the icons including the hidden ones. Hidden icons will have an X over then. alt+scroll wheel over an X-out icon and uncheck Hide Application.Repeat the process and uncheck the Show All to rehide the other icons you have set to

Adobe Acrobat 7.0 / 8.0 Standard or Prof - Making pdfs searchable / OCRing
2007-06-18 08:53:00
This is a quickie recipe on how convert those non-searchable (image only) pdfs into searchable pdfs. Note, if the pdfs contain images the OCRing of the pdf may not be 100% accurate. This recipe requires you to have Adobe Acrobat Standard or Professional; the reader will not have these advanced editing options. In Acrobat 7.0/8.0, open up the PDF file you want to convert.Once the non-searchable pdf is open, go to Document > Recognize Text Using OCR > StartYou can tell if a pdf is searchable or not by doing a search of the PDF in Acrobat. I usually will do a search for the word "the" since it prob is in the document. If you get no results and do see the word, its a non-searchable pdf.An alternative to doing this is Printing the PDF to the AdobePDF printer. This will also make the document searchable (ie you can print in Word to the AdobePDF printer and it will create a searchable pdf of that document).

Windows 2000/XP/Vista: Fix a Window or Application that Opens Offscreen
2007-06-13 07:16:00
Every once in a while, you will run into a situation where a window or application opens somewhere beyond the scope of your monitor. It magically was placed somewhere to the far, far right and you can't get to it to bring it back. I've experienced this with Winamp and IE has done this to me a couple of times. There's a simple solution to get your application or window back on your screen, here's how:The key to this is to change the screen resolution to a lower value, thereby making windows move everything to fit the new resolution. Once this is done, simply return the resolution to its previous setting. To change your screen resolution:1. Right-click your desktop.2. For Window s 2000/XP, Select Properties. When the Display Properties window appears, select the Settings tab. For Windows Vista , select Personalize and from the Personalize window, click Display Settings.3. Use the slider under Screen resolution to change the resolution.4. Click Apply.5. When prompted as to whether you wa

Get Latitude and Longitude values from Google Maps
2007-06-13 07:06:00
Google Maps do no display latitude and longitude values, but there is an easy trick to get these numbers. This technique will provide the latitude and longitude coordinates of the center of the map displayed by Google Maps.Looking up an address in Google Maps will center the map on that address if it was found. Because this trick provides the latitude and longitude of the center of the map, moving the map around manually after that will change the center position and this technique will not work accurately. When the location you want is in the center of the map, copy and paste this code into the location bar of your browser and press enter:javascript:void(prompt('',gApplication.getMap().getCenter()));A little dialog box will pop up displaying the coordinates which can be copied and pasted for use elsewhere. This code can be bookmarked and then used in the future by selecting the bookmark.
